ABS: The Versatile Engineering Thermoplastic – Properties & Processing

Table of Content [Hide]

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is an amorphous terpolymer known for its excellent balance of properties, ease of processing, and wide range of applications. This versatile material combines strength, rigidity, and aesthetic appeal, making it a popular choice across industries.

    Key Properties of ABS

    1. Mechanical Strength & Durability

    • High impact resistance, even at low temperatures

    • Good rigidity and surface hardness with a glossy finish

    • Excellent dimensional stability and creep resistance

    • Low friction coefficient, minimally affected by temperature/humidity

    2. Thermal Characteristics

    • Heat deflection temperature: 93–100°C

    • Decomposition temperature: 270°C

    • Limited heat resistance; color may shift at high temperatures

    3. Chemical & Electrical Properties

    • Resistant to water, inorganic salts, acids, and alkalis

    • Susceptible to stress cracking when exposed to acetic acid/vegetable oils

    • Dissolves/swells in ketones, aldehydes, esters, and chlorinated hydrocarbons

    • Low moisture absorption with good electrical insulation properties

    4. Material Modification Options

    • ABS + PC: Enhances heat resistance

    • ABS + SAN: Improves thermal performance

    • ABS + PVC: Boosts flame retardancy

    • MBS: Transparent alternative with similar properties

    Processing Advantages of ABS

    1. Excellent Melt Flow

    • Flow length-to-thickness ratio (L/T): ~190

    • Moderate melt viscosity due to butadiene rubber content

    • Note: Higher rubber content reduces flow (unaffected by temperature increases)

    2. Injection Molding Parameters

    • Melt Temperature: High but strictly controlled to prevent degradation

    • Injection Pressure/Speed: Medium to low

    • Holding Pressure/Back Pressure: Low

    • Cycle Time: Short

    3. Pre-Processing Requirements

    • Drying Essential: Moisture content must be <0.3% despite low absorption rate

    • Low Shrinkage: Minimal warping with some inherent stress (usually no annealing needed)

    4. Post-Processing Versatility

    • Compatible with metal inserts

    • Suitable for adhesive bonding, painting, screen printing, and electroplating

    • High surface replication for detailed finishes

    5. Mold Design Considerations

    • Use hard, polished mold materials for scratch-resistant surfaces

    • Standard cooling: chilled water

    • High-gloss applications: 60–70°C mold temperature
